The Balconies and Say Yes impress at Ritual

The Balconies were back in town this past weekend for a CD Release show for their new album – Fast Motions – a must have! The band belted out a fantastic set to a sold out crowd.

My love affair with The Balconies began 4 years ago, when I first heard them in the 2010 LiVE 88.5 Big Money Shot competition. Within a few songs, I knew they had something special and I’ve been following them ever since.

I love the recent addition of Steve on drums. Not only is he a great summer, but it has enhanced the band’s live sound so much, having Liam wail away on a second guitar and giving Jacquie space to expand on her vocals.

You could feel the enthusiasm brimming from the band as they were thrilled to be back in front of their hometown crowd. Their raucous set included some of my favourites – Kill Count, The Slo, and Boys and Girls.

Warming up the crowd beforehand were Say Yes, featuring ex-members of Alexisonfire and Saint Alvia. Though I only managed to catch about half of their set, they left me wanting to hear more. A driving beat, crunchy guitar and a nice raspy vocal made me take notice. Be sure to check out the video for Sunrise on YouTube! If you missed them, you can catch them yourself when they join Danko Jones later this month at Mavericks.

A memorable show from one of my favourites and a new discovery made for a great concert!
