The headliner on day 8 was none other than Rage Against The Machine. It was the band’s first Canadian show since 1999. It was a busy night, probably the busiest of the whole festival, and not surprising, given that they were originally supposed to play in 2020. With the ongoing pandemic and the cancellation that year, they were then announced again for 2021, but alas, that was cancelled too. Rage fans in Ottawa, including myself were thrilled when we finally knew this was going to be the year. But a few days before the show, there was some question as to whether it would happen.

You see, earlier in the week, lead singer Zack de la Rocha hurt his foot at one of their shows. Fortunately, the show was to go on. Zack was carried out to the front of the stage, where he sat for the next hour and a half, belting out his vocals with all the intensity we’ve come to know. The band’s setlist was full of all the songs one would expect. Anyone who was there for the band, did not go home disappointed.

Run The Jewels were the only opening slot on the main stage. Killer Mike and El-P did a great job entertaining and warming up the crowd, which was already very large by the time they hit the stage.

I really wanted to take in the main stage this night, so I didn’t wander too far, other than to take in the trio of fantastic local acts on the other stages. The Commotions kicked off the evening in the tent. Known for their funky groove, the band delivered it in full force with 12 members on stage. Their sound was infectious and I’m sure if you were in the crowd, it was not possible for you to stand still!

Next I wandered over to the River Stage where I was looking forward to checking out the Okies for the first time. The warm sunny weather was a perfect compliment to their sound. The band benefitted from not having to compete with a main stage act at the same time and most definitely picked up some new fans with their performance. Check these guys out if you get the chance. They’re definitely worth a listen!

Finally, I was able to catch Jessica Pearson the East Wind. Having seen the group previously, it was great to hear them once again and catch some of their new songs live for the first time.

As always, be sure to check out our Bluesfest locals series and discover some of the great music being created right here in the capital region!
