Pandaleon at Ottawa Bluesfest 2016

I love heading down to Bluesfest early to catch what I can of the various local bands that are typically getting things going as the crowd enters the festival grounds. Sometimes I’m catching a band I’ve seen several times in a small club, other times I’m stumbling across something completely new.

I will admit that I don’t often head into the Barney Danson theatre if there is something else to take in outside. Luckily for me Pandaléon‘s start time didn’t conflict with anything else. I found the name intriguing and decided to head inside and see what the band was about. I’m glad I did!

I found their songwriting compelling. As I wandered around taking photos, words like dark, moody, heavy and melodic came to mind as thought to myself what I might write about the band’s performance. The lighting was fairly dark and completely suited the band’s musical style.

The trio hails from St-Bernardin, a small town just outside of Ottawa. They released their album Atone, earlier this year, which you can find on the band’s Bandcamp website. I was so intrigued by their performance that I have since given the album a listen and I highly recommend it.

I now have my sights set on Pandaléon. I hope to be able to take in a full performance sometime in the near future. Now that I am familiar with some of their music, I would love to hear them live a second time. While I’m digging the album, this trio’s music truly should be heard performed live.
