Yusso at Ottawa Bluesfest 2016

Day 3 was a wet one! Early on in the evening it was off and on, before finally turning into a light steady rainfall about the time The Lumineers took the stage.

Despite the rain, the locals hitting the stage made the best of it. My first stop was Yusso‘s set at 5pm. Not afraid of the large City stage, Yusso used it well, bounding from side to side as he dropped his rhymes on the growing crowd. Though I have been hearing his name quite a bit recently, I was not at all familiar with Yusso. After catching some of his set, I look forward to hearing more. His lyrics were well crafted and a few times I found myself caught up in his performance, momentarily forgetting about my camera.

After Yusso’s set, it was off to the Monster Energy stage to check in with Silver Creek who I’ve seen a few times over the years now. As always, their energy was infectious. Due to the rain, the band was pushed back a good 10 feet on the stage to keep them and their equipment dry from the rain. Lead vocalist Shawn Tavernier took every opportunity he could to come out in front of the monitors to get just a little bit closer to the crowd gathered in front of the stage. There were smiles all around as the band were clearly enjoy themselves despite the conditions. The crowd returned that enthusiasm not letting a little rain ruin their good time.

Taking the same stage afterwards, for a short 15 minute set, was last year’s She’s the One winner Grace Lachance. She was all smiles while not singing as she strummed her guitar. Grace has a great voice and I think you will be hearing her name more in the coming years.

Amanda Rheaume at Ottawa Bluesfest 2016

Closing out the string of locals hitting the Monster stage on Saturday was Amanda Rheaume. Amanda has been a fixture on the Ottawa music scene for years and is no stranger to local audiences. Grinning from ear to ear as she took the stage, she wasted no time kicking up the energy again and cranking out her tunes to a wet but appreciative audience. You can check out her latest album Holding Patterns, which was just released back in May, on Apple Music.
