Half Moon Run at Ottawa Bluesfest 2016

If last Saturday was the rain day, day 5 was definitely the hot and sticky day, made worse by the huge crowd on hand for the various acts performing this evening. Every time I passed through the War Museum, it seemed busier than usual, with large numbers heading indoors to enjoy a little air conditioning before heading out to catch their next artist of interest. As usual, there was a lot of music to take in, and a good mix of styles.

I started my evening listening to the wonderfully talented Danielle Allard (separate in depth review coming).

Carlo hit the Black Sheep Stage early with their brand of instrumental surf rock. Given the hot sweaty evening, the tunes were fitting. Despite the heat, it wasn’t too much for a handful of people in the growing crowd to shed a few moves along with the band’s beats.

After taking in the start of Her Harbour’s show (separate review coming) in the Barney Danson theatre, I headed off to see what The Decemberists had to offer. I knew their name from when they first broke into the music scene, but they weren’t a band I had kept up with over the years. Based on the first few songs and the strength of their performance, I’m going to dig into their catalog and give them further listen. Unlike myself, there was a large contingent of fans out for the evening that were familiar with the band. There was a large roar from the crowd as the band came out and wasted no time in kicking into their set.

After The Decemberists it was time to head back to the Black Sheep Stage and have a listen to XXYYXX, an electronic artist out of Orlando, Florida. I gave up on the photo pit after 1 song as he was stuck behind a large table and the shooting angles weren’t all that great. I headed out into the crowd where I could better appreciate the performance and feel the vide from the crowd. The crowd at the Black Sheep Stage was quite large at this point and they seemed to be enjoying the music. I must admit, I have been impressed with the electronic acts Bluesfest has been bringing the last few years. As a fan of a wide range of music, it’s been great for discovering some new acts.

I later headed back to the Barney Danson Theatre to check out Arnpiror based Craig Cardiff. The theatre was packed to capacity. After the first few numbers it was easy to see why. You couldn’t help but get sucked in by Craig’s easy going manner and strong songs. To start off he mentioned that he would be looking for audience participation. He comically mentioned that if you were too shy to join in, to close your eyes and move your lips. He wasted no time in his ask either. As the first song started he gave the crowd their part and sure enough, a large portion of the crowd joined in with him. As I left the theatre to make my way over for Half Moon Run, there was a still a small lineup of people hoping to make their way into the theatre. A couple of them I’m sure were greatful to see me leave as they made their way in.

There was about a 20 minute delay before Half Moon Run finally took the stage and broke into Turn Your Love. The crowd burst into cheers of approval. From there the band took the audience on musical ride that included Consider Yourself, Drug You, Call Me in the Afternoon and Full Circle. At last I had finally seen them live. The performance was strong and I can’t wait to see them upon their return to Ottawa. Hopefully they don’t keep us waiting too long.
